Specialist neonatal respiratory care for babies born preterm

NICE has published NICE Guideline (NG) 124, Specialist neonatal respiratory care for babies born preterm.

Preterm babies are at increased risk of respiratory disorders (for example, bronchopulmonary dysplasia [BPD] and respiratory distress syndrome) but ensuring the highest quality respiratory care can reduce the length of hospital stay and the risk of long‑term disability.

The recommendations made by NG124 cover:

  • risk factors for BPD
  • respiratory support for preterm babies
  • managing respiratory disorders
  • monitoring
  • sedation and analgesia
  • involving, supporting, and informing parents and carers
  • discharge planning.
