NICE has published NICE Guideline (NG) 124, Specialist neonatal respiratory care for babies born preterm.
Preterm babies are at increased risk of respiratory disorders (for example, bronchopulmonary dysplasia [BPD] and respiratory distress syndrome) but ensuring the highest quality respiratory care can reduce the length of hospital stay and the risk of long‑term disability.
The recommendations made by NG124 cover:
- risk factors for BPD
- respiratory support for preterm babies
- managing respiratory disorders
- sedation and analgesia
- involving, supporting, and informing parents and carers
- discharge planning.
